Beneath the Duomo
The Duomo of Florence is built upon layers of ancient cultures - early Roman, later Roman, early Christian and later Christian. This was one of our "finds".
The "map" on the right shows the four different layers under the Duomo. We were here for hours.
The tomb of Filippo Brunelleschi. He designed and built the dome for the Duomo, the Basilica di San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito and the Pazzi Family Chapel. Most of his major works were done in Florence. He is credited with being one of the foremost architects and engineers of the Italian Renaissance.
This statue of Brunelleschi is placed so he is looking up at his dome.
